Google AdWords remarketing allows you to target people that have previously visited your website. This is achieved by tagging visitors with a cookie when they visit a certain page on your website. This guide will be explaining the process in a step by step format.

Setting up remarketing for the first time:

The entire process to setup a remarketing campaign could be divided into three different steps:

• Generating remarketing code and placing it in the website

• Creating remarketing list

• Remarketing campaign setup

Let’s move into the detailed process.

How to generate and add the remarketing tag?

First, you need to add the Google AdWords remarketing tag to your website. You should add this tag to the footer of your website so that it will be applied to all of your pages.

• Log into Google AdWords

• Click Shared library

• Set up remarketing

AdWords will prompt you to add the tag to your website before you create a remarketing list. You can view the code directly, so you can copy and paste it directly into the footer of your website. Alternatively, you can email the code to yourself and use it later.

• Place the code at the bottom of all pages on the website, before the closing tag (If the website uses a common file for a footer, you may place the code snippet there rather than on every page of your website.)

• Save and publish your pages.

• Check if you have implemented the tag correctly.

Within a couple of days, your tag should start collecting the cookies of users who visit your website, and our "All visitors" list will begin to populate. If this doesn't happen, check the "Remarketing tag" validation box, found in the corner of the screen.You may skip these steps in this initial stage as we have an option to generate the tag later as well.

Create a list by choosing the specific criteria in sync with the objectives you aim to achieve with the remarketing campaign. First, you need to give the remarketing list a title and choose whether you want to include visitors to your website and/or mobile app. Next, you need to define who you want to add to your list. From the drop down, you’ll be able to choose from a range of criteria to target visitors that have visited certain pages on your website. This saves you from having to create or add different codes to your website. To qualify for a remarketing campaign, your list has to contain at least 100 visitors that have previously visited your website within the last 30 days.

If you have not added remarketing tag yet to your pages, you should execute the following steps. Else, skip these steps.

• Click View AdWords tag for websites.

• Select and copy the remarketing tag code.

• Place the code at the bottom of all pages on the website.

• Save and publish your pages.

• Check that we've implemented the tag correctly.

To view the Google AdWords Remarketing tag, you may also try the following steps after the setup process.

• Click Continue.

• Click Return to Audiences.

• Click Tag details.

• Click Setup.

• Click View AdWords tag for websites.

How to edit after setup process?

• Sign in to AdWords.

• Click Shared library.

• Under "Audiences," click View.

• Under "Website visitors," click "Set up remarketing" and complete the setup process.

• Locate the "Remarketing tag" box in the top right.

• Click Tag details.

• Click Setup.

• Click View AdWords tag for websites.

• Select and copy the remarketing tag code.

• Place the code at the bottom of all pages on your website.

• Save and publish your pages.

• Check that you've implemented the tag correctly with Google Tag Assistant.

Setting up Remarketing Campaign:

Once your remarketing list has been created, it’s time to turn your attention to creating the Remarketing campaign itself.

• Navigate to the ‘Campaigns’ tab of your AdWords account.

• Click the ‘+Campaign’ button.

• Select ‘Display Network only.’

• Set an initial default bid.

• Select ‘Interests & remarketing’ as the targeting option.
